The minimum wage in Venezuela stands at 40,638 bolivars a month (just $10, according to the popular, unofficial exchange rate on In 2016 Venezuela`s inflation hit 800%. This situation and the shortage of basic products forces some people to go to the nearest country to acquire their basic market basket. One of the important places is Arauca (Colombia), where people spend between 3 and 20 hours traveling by bus, crossing the border, buying their basic products and returning home, in most cases the investment goes beyond 1 minimum wage.

The connection between Colombia and Venezuela in Arauca is made by the international bridge Jose Antonio Paez, where vehicles are not allowed and people have to get by walking.
